PURPOSE OF ARK HOUSE
Ark House provides temporary low-cost housing for families and their loved ones while receiving extended medical treatment at Dallas area hospitals. It is the hope of volunteers and Ark House contributors that by providing these basic needs, some of the burden will be eased while families must be away from home to receive extended medical treatment.

Overview of Ark House
For 26 years Ark House has reached out to families in need. The all-volunteer group has helped thousands of families through difficult times when medical treatment requires the patient be close to specialized medical care. The twenty fully-furnished, one- bedroom apartments maintained by Ark House are in close proximity to Dallas hospitals.

After referral from a hospital social worker, rental units are available to qualifying families for a nominal fee.

History
The organization began in 1985 with one apartment. The Ark Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church Richardson wanted to provide a safe haven for families unable to return home while receiving extended medical care --- an outreach to families in need. What was once a church class's humanitarian mission is now an independent nonprofit charitable organization.

During its 26- year history Ark House has outgrown its humble beginnings --- expanding and relocating several times as the need for medical housing support has grown.

Shepherd Program
The Shepherd Program is offered to all Ark House residents. The concept is simple: a volunteer Shepherd telephones each family to offer friendship and support throughout their stay.
